How to Plan Pakistani Wedding in UK: 12-Month Timeline

A Pakistani wedding in the UK usually has many events. These can include Dholki nights, Mayun, Mehndi, Nikah, Baraat, and Walima. Two families often host these events, with guests coming from all over the UK and other countries. Because of UK rules, busy venues, and outfits that need to be made, having a clear timeline is very important. This 12-month guide shows what to do and when.

Good planning starts with an honest family conversation about budget, guests and events.

Quick answers

  • How long do we need? Twelve months is comfortable; popular venues may book further ahead.
  • What comes first? Budget, guest numbers, dates and the venue.
  • Legal steps? In England and Wales, give notice at least 29 days before the ceremony, and hold it within 12 months of giving notice (GOV.UK).
  • When should the bride order outfits? Around six to nine months ahead for bridal wear, with every outfit ordered at least eight weeks before its event.
  • Biggest mistake? Leaving outfits, legal notice and vendor bookings until the last few months.

Before you start: four family decisions

Before booking anything, agree on these points with both families:

  • Which events will happen and which family hosts each one? Customs can be different..
  • What is the total budget, and how will it be shared?
  • How many guests will come to each event?
  • What dates work best, considering Ramadan, Eid, school holidays, and travel plans for relatives? Islamic dates change each year, so check them for your year.

Our guide to Pakistani wedding events tells what each function involves.

Budget planning

Every family has different priorities. Venues and food usually cost the most, followed by decorations, outfits, and photography. Set those amounts first and keep 5 to 10% aside for unexpected costs. Ask every vendor for a written quote and keep a shared list so both families can see what has been booked and paid.

Set the budget and guest list

Make a budget for each event and agree on who pays for what. Create a guest list for each event, as numbers can change between Mehndi and Baraat.

Choose dates and book venues

Choose venues based on size, food options, prayer facilities, and parking, and book the main venue first. Our UK venues guide includes a checklist of questions to ask.

Arrange the Nikah

Decide where the Nikah will happen and contact the imam or mosque. Check if the venue is registered for marriages, as this affects legal steps.

Book key vendors

Book a halal caterer, photographer, videographer, and DJ or dhol players early for popular dates.

Vendor booking checklist

  • Venue for each event
  • Imam or Nikah officiant
  • Halal caterer
  • Photographer and videographer
  • Bridal makeup artist
  • Decorator and stage designer
  • DJ or dhol players
  • Mehndi artist
  • Baraat transport
  • Wedding cake and mithai

Check every vendor contract for

  • Cancellation terms
  • Overtime charges
  • Setup and clean-up duties
  • What happens if they cancel
  • Arrival and finish times

9 to 7 months before

Order the bridal outfits

Start with outfits for the Baraat and Walima, then for Mehndi and Nikah. If shopping in Pakistan, plan your trip now. Our Bridal Trousseau Shopping Guide explains what to buy where.

Book the makeup artist and decorator

Bridal makeup artists and decorators are often busy on peak weekends. Agree on stage colors and lighting, as these affect outfit choices.

Send save-the-dates

Give guests plenty of notice, especially those coming from Pakistan or other countries. Relatives needing a visa should check the requirements early.

Plan for overseas guests

Set an earlier RSVP deadline for guests from abroad, share venue addresses and transport options, and choose one family member to answer travel questions. Invitation letters can help with visa applications but do not guarantee a visa.

6 to 4 months before

Coordinate family outfits

Agree on color themes for each event and share them with close family. See our guides for the mother of the bride and the groom.

Design and send invitations

Include every event, dress codes, color themes, and RSVP dates. Note any seating arrangements so guests can plan.

Menu tasting, accommodation and transport

Attend the catering tasting, reserve hotel rooms for out-of-town guests, and book transport for the Baraat and rukhsati.

Plan the Dholki and Mehndi nights

Decide how many Dholki evenings to host and where, and who will cater. Book a mehndi artist for the bride, as bridal mehndi is often done a day or two before the main Mehndi function, and consider a second artist for guests.

Choose jewellery and accessories

Once the outfits are chosen, select jewelry and shoes. Our accessorising guide explains how.

A Nikah alone may not be legally recognized. A religious wedding can be recognized if it happens at a registered building with an authorized person; otherwise, you need a registrar or a separate civil ceremony.

Step What GOV.UK says
Choose the venue You must decide where the ceremony will take place before giving notice
Give notice At your local register office, at least 29 days before the ceremony; you must have lived in the district for the past 7 days
Timing The ceremony must take place within 12 months of giving notice
Witnesses At least 2 witnesses are needed at a civil ceremony
Registrar fees £62 at a register office or £114.50 at a registered religious building; other venues may differ

Documents to prepare for giving notice

Check GOV.UK for the required documents, as rules can vary.

  • Details of the final ceremony venue
  • A valid passport or UK birth certificate
  • Proof of address
  • Evidence of any name change
  • Proof a previous marriage has ended, if applicable
  • Extra documents if either partner is from outside the UK

See GOV.UK: documents you'll need to give notice.

If one partner is from outside the UK or Ireland, different rules may apply. Book your notice appointment early, as register offices can be busy.

3 to 2 months before

Give notice and book the registrar

Give notice of marriage on time and confirm the registrar or authorized person for your ceremony.

Place final outfit orders

Order all remaining outfits at least eight weeks before the event to allow time for making, delivery, and changes.

Finalise the groom's outfits

Complete the groom's fittings and accessories.

The final month

  • Final fittings: try on every outfit with shoes and jewelry, and arrange any changes needed.
  • RSVPs and seating: follow up on replies, finalize numbers, and create seating plans, including any special needs.
  • Vendor confirmations: send each vendor a written timeline, venue address, and contact person.
  • Payments: pay balances on the agreed dates and keep receipts.
  • Bridal room: confirm access times at each venue and where outfits can hang.
  • Guest comfort: check for allergies and dietary needs, meals for children, seating for elderly guests, prayer arrangements, and access to drinking water at every event.

Frequently asked questions

Can we plan a Pakistani wedding in six months?

Yes, with flexibility. Book the venue and key vendors immediately, choose ready-to-ship or quicker outfits where needed, and give legal notice within the required window.

Is a Nikah legally recognised in the UK?

It depends on where and how it takes place. In England and Wales, a religious ceremony can be legally recognised at a registered religious building with an authorised person present; otherwise, a registrar or separate civil ceremony is needed.

When should we give notice of marriage?

At least 29 days before the ceremony, and no more than 12 months before. Choose your venue first, as the notice must include it.

Which family hosts which event?

It varies. Traditionally, the bride's family often hosts the Mehndi and Baraat, and the groom's family the Walima, but many families now share events or costs. Agree this early.

How do we help relatives travelling from Pakistan?

Send save-the-dates early, share invitation letters if needed, and ask them to check visa requirements on GOV.UK well in advance.

Final verdict

A Pakistani wedding in the UK has many parts, but a 12-month plan makes it easier. Agree on the basics as a family, book venues and vendors early, give legal notice on time, and order outfits in advance. Then you can enjoy every event, from the first Dholki to the Walima.
